The Panzer IV was the most widely used German tank during the Second World War. It formed the backbone of German armoured divisions in all theatres of operation. Production of the Panzer IV Ausf. F, which began in 1941, was a decisive impetus in the tank' s evolution. It featured improved armour on the turret and hull. The first version of the Panzer IV F with the traditional 7.5 cm. The short-barreled KwK 37 cannon was unable to fight effectively against the Soviet T-34 and KV-1 heavy armoured tanks. The adoption of the KwK 40 long-barreled anti-tank design, on the Ausf. F2 version, definitely increased the Panzer IV' s effectiveness against enemy tanks. With its new high-velocity, high-penetration cannon, the Panzer IV once again became deadly on the battlefields. They were used, albeit in limited numbers, in the 15th and 21st Panzer Divisions on the North African front.
